Rep. Mike Boland’s political instincts seem to have trumped his civics teaching savvy. The retiring Illinois 71st District state representative sponsored a bill to block the Rock Island County pay raises.

We support his sentiment, but the tactic seems goofy. State legislatures in America typically do not override a county board on matters of pay. If one did, it certainly shouldn’t be the cash-strapped and raise-happy Illinois Legislature.
While Boland’s legislation wouldn’t reverse the county’s unjustified pay raises, it definitely generated a moment of statewide shame for his Democrat county colleagues in Rock Island County. Perhaps it was Boland’s parting shot, since most of those county Democrats haven’t done many favors for him over the years.

Rock Island County’s Democrat-controlled county board voted 19-6 in favor of the pay raises on May 18.
The county’s sole Republican member, Rich Morthland, opposed the raises.
