Pat Quinn was criticized Friday for taking a three-stop trip in the state-owned plane to tout Illinois' first sales tax holiday that launched Friday. The governor traveled to Chicago, Rockford and Moline to call attention to the kickoff of the back-to-school sales tax holiday that offers Illinois shoppers a 5 percent sales tax break on clothing purchases that ring in at $100 or less each and school supplies through Aug. 15. During his afternoon stop at Moline's Kmart on Avenue of the Cities, a supporter of Rich Morthland, the GOP District 71 state representative candidate, distributed a press release stating Gov. Quinn was wasting taxpayer dollars on a campaign trip at a time when the state faces a $13 billion budget deficit. "Gov. Quinn's visit to the Quad Cities demonstrates j

Plummer comes to town
Area business people share concerns with lt. gov. candidate Posted Online: Aug. 05, 2010, 6:12 pm Comment on this story | Print this story | Email this story By Brandy Donaldson, bdonaldson@qconline.com Scott Sidor, president of Safe Money Concepts in Port Byron, does not want to move his growing business to Iowa, but he said Thursday he will consider doing so if Illinois' business climate does not soon soften. "I can go across the border very easily if the taxes on employers go up very quickly here, and that bothers me," he said. "My concern is if they raise taxes I'll have to pick up and go to Iowa where I don't have the tax problems I have here." Mr. Sidor shared his concerns with Republican lieutenant governor candidate Jason Plummer on Thursday and was satisfied with the answers he got, he said. Mr. Plummer and GOP District 71 state representative candidate Rich Morthland met with about half a dozen area business people at Johnny's Italian Steak House in Moline to

Morthland Campaign Headquarters Hosts Farmer’s Market
PORT BYRON – Rich Morthland, a member of the Rock Island County Board and Republican candidate for the open 71st House District seat, is pleased to announce today that his campaign headquarters in Port Byron is now hosting a farmers market on Wednesday afternoons this summer “Several weeks ago, a local produce stand contacted my campaign office and asked if they could set up a small farmers market in our campaign headquarters parking lot on Wednesday afternoons,” Morthland said. “We thought this was a wonderful idea, and we readily agreed to have them come in.” Morthland campaign headquarters is located on Route 84 in Port Byron at 215 N. High Street “The stand is not affiliated with our campaign in any way except for the fact that we will share our space,” Morthland said. “We are pleased to be able to provide our space as a service to our community.” The stand is open from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesdays through the summer. Rich Morthland in the Illinois Review
Saturday, July 17, 2010 Pay raises reflect insular arrogance by Rich Morthland Last week, Illinois heard a tale with a locally familiar ring. Gov. Pat Quinn has given out more raises to members of his staff than he has staff members. He did this while the chasm in Illinois’ budget gaped to $13 billion, our unfunded pension liability ballooned past the $60 billion mark, and our worst-in-the-nation bond rating slid into a slot between Iceland and Iraq. Where I live, it reopened the wound of the Rock Island County Board’s attempt to give 12.5 percent pay raises to incoming elected officials while asking the rest of the staff to tighten their belts – or worse. I am not suggesting that public employees should work unpaid or that raises never are appropriate. However, granting raises to elected officials and gubernatorial staff when government’s financial house is collapsing is as revealing as it is reprehensible. These acts have demonstrated that our state and local governm
